# Why Pallet Prices Vary and What Buyers Should Be Paying Attention To

Published by [Stephen Bartalini](https://newsroom.pallettrader.com/author/stephen-bartalini) on 11/2/26, 2:30 PM

If you’re buying pallets across multiple locations, you’ve probably noticed that the same pallet can have a different price depending on where you’re buying it. Sometimes the difference is a few cents. Other times it’s a dollar or more. And just because you negotiated a good price six months ago doesn’t necessarily mean that price reflects today’s market.

There’s a reason for that. Pallet prices are influenced by several factors, many of which have little to do with the supplier you’re buying from. Understanding those factors can help you make better purchasing decisions, recognize when increases are justified and identify opportunities you might otherwise miss.

## What Affects Pallet Prices?

Pallet prices are shaped by a handful of factors, most of which have nothing to do with the supplier you’re buying from:

- Location. Pallet markets are local, so the same pallet can cost more in one region than another.
- New vs. recycled. New pallet pricing follows lumber, labor and manufacturing capacity. Recycled pallet prices follow the supply of usable cores.
- Transportation. Freight is a large share of the delivered pallet cost.
- Specifications. Grade, lumber type, board thickness and design all affect cost and availability.
- Market conditions. Labor, fuel and demand from other buyers can shift pricing even when your volume hasn’t changed.

Each of these is covered in more detail below.

## Pallet Prices Are Local

One of the biggest misconceptions about pallet pricing is that there’s a national 48x40 pallet price. There isn’t.

Even when two facilities are purchasing the same specification, the cost to produce, source and deliver those pallets can vary significantly by location. Lumber availability, labor costs, transportation, local demand and access to recycled pallet cores all influence pricing. A supplier in one market may have an abundance of available material while another is struggling to keep up with demand. A pallet that’s readily available in one region may be difficult to source in another. That’s why comparing prices between facilities without understanding the local market can be misleading. A lower price in one location doesn’t automatically mean another location is overpaying.

## New Pallets and Recycled Pallets Have Different Cost Drivers

Not all pallets are affected by the same market conditions. New wood pallet pricing is heavily influenced by lumber, labor, manufacturing capacity and transportation. When lumber costs rise, manufacturers eventually have to account for those increases.

Recycled pallets operate differently. Their availability depends largely on how many used pallets are moving back into the market and how many can be recovered, repaired and resold. These used pallets are commonly referred to as cores.

![Comparison of what drives new pallet prices (lumber, labor, manufacturing capacity, transportation) versus recycled pallet prices (core supply, core condition, demand).](https://newsroom.pallettrader.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Pallet%20prices%20new%20vs%20recycled%20cost%20drivers@1x.png?width=1200&height=720&name=Pallet%20prices%20new%20vs%20recycled%20cost%20drivers@1x.png)

When businesses generate fewer usable cores, or demand for recycled pallets increases faster than the supply of available cores, recycled pallet prices can rise even when lumber prices are relatively stable. The condition of those cores matters too. A market may have plenty of broken pallets available but very few that can be repaired economically into the grade customers require. That’s an important distinction, especially for companies purchasing higher-grade recycled pallets.

## Transportation Can Change the Economics Quickly

Pallets take up a lot of trailer space relative to their value. That makes transportation a significant part of the delivered pallet cost.

A supplier offering a lower price per pallet may not actually be the lowest-cost option once freight is included. Distance matters, but so do truck availability, fuel costs, order quantities and delivery frequency.

![Comparison showing a supplier with a lower pallet price but higher freight cost versus a supplier with a higher pallet price and lower delivered cost.](https://newsroom.pallettrader.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Pallet%20prices%20price%20vs%20delivered%20cost@1x.png?width=1200&height=720&name=Pallet%20prices%20price%20vs%20delivered%20cost@1x.png)

A customer ordering full truckloads on a predictable schedule may have access to different economics than one placing smaller, frequent or emergency orders. For companies operating multiple distribution centers, those differences can add up. It’s also why a supplier located farther away isn’t necessarily a better option simply because the pallet itself is cheaper. The number that matters is the delivered cost of a pallet that meets your requirements.

## Specifications Affect More Than Quality

Two pallets may look nearly identical but have very different costs.

Board thickness, lumber type, grade, repair standards, stringer design, load capacity and other requirements can affect both the cost and availability of the pallet. Sometimes those requirements are necessary. A pallet moving through automation, supporting a heavy load or meeting a customer’s specific requirements may need to be built differently.

But [specifications](https://www.pallettrader.com/specifications) can also become more restrictive over time without anyone revisiting why. There are situations where facilities continue purchasing a particular pallet because that’s what they’ve always used, even though the original reason for the specification may no longer exist. That doesn’t mean the specification should automatically change. It means it should be understood. Before asking a supplier to reduce pricing, it’s worth asking whether the pallet being purchased is actually the right one for the operation.

## Why Prices Can Increase Even When Your Volume Hasn’t Changed

One of the more frustrating situations for buyers is receiving a price increase when nothing about their own purchasing activity has changed. Same pallet. Same volume. Same delivery location. So why the increase?

Because the supplier’s market may have changed. Perhaps recycled cores have become harder to find. Transportation costs have increased. Labor expenses have changed. Or demand from other buyers has reduced the amount of available supply. In some cases, the supplier may have absorbed those increases for months before passing them along.

That doesn’t mean every increase is justified or that buyers should accept one without asking questions. But understanding what’s driving the increase is more productive than assuming the supplier is simply trying to improve its margin. Always understand what’s changed, whether the increase reflects the local market and what alternatives are available.

## The Lowest Pallet Price Isn’t Always the Lowest Cost

This is where pricing connects to the larger [pallet program](https://newsroom.pallettrader.com/pallet-program-costs-where-the-money-is-hiding-pallettrader).

A lower purchase price can create savings. It can also create problems if the pallet doesn’t perform as expected or the supplier can’t consistently meet demand.

Poor-quality pallets can lead to damaged product, rejected loads, additional handling and downtime. Unreliable supply can force facilities to carry more inventory or place expensive emergency orders. And a pallet that has value after use may have different economics than one that goes directly into a waste stream.

That’s why companies should look at the full pallet cost, not just the unit price, when comparing suppliers. Price matters. So do quality, service, inventory requirements, availability and recovery value.

The cheapest pallet isn’t necessarily the least expensive pallet to use.

## What Should Buyers Do When Pallet Prices Change?

Don't overreact to every market movement by immediately putting your pallet business out to bid. Sometimes the current supplier is still the best option.

Instead, start by understanding the market and asking a few questions.

### Questions to ask when your pallet price changes

- ✔ Are the changes specific to one supplier or occurring across the region?
- ✔ Are your specifications limiting available supply?
- ✔ Could adjusting order quantities or delivery frequency improve the delivered cost?
- ✔ Do you have qualified alternatives if your current supplier can't meet demand?

For companies with multiple facilities, also understand whether similar locations are experiencing the same changes and whether there are opportunities to improve how pallets are sourced across the network.

A good [pallet procurement strategy](https://www.pallettrader.com/managed-services/) should give you enough visibility to answer those questions before a pricing or supply issue becomes a bigger problem.

## Understand the Market Before You Make a Decision

Pallet prices will continue to change. That’s part of operating in a market influenced by raw materials, transportation, labor, demand and available supply.

The objective shouldn’t be to predict every price movement or constantly chase the lowest quote. It should be to understand what you’re buying, what drives the cost, whether the price is competitive in your market and what alternatives are available.

In our previous article, [There’s More Money Hiding in Your Pallet Program Than You Think](https://newsroom.pallettrader.com/pallet-program-costs-where-the-money-is-hiding-pallettrader), we discussed why the purchase price is only one part of the equation. This is where that thinking starts.

Before asking what a pallet should cost, understand why it costs what it does.

[At PalletTrader](https://www.pallettrader.com/about-us/), we work with buyers and suppliers across the U.S. and Canada to understand local market conditions, sourcing options and opportunities to improve pallet programs.

Buy better. Waste less. Recover more.
